Local History Group
The Silsden Local History Group holds a monthly research session in the meeting room on the ground floor of the Town Hall. This is held on the fourth Tuesday of the month, from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. It is held on most months of the year, excepting August and December, but other months in which there are bank holidays can also be missed. For confirmation of dates please see the Group’s own website at https://silsdenhistorygroup.co.uk or look on the Town Hall notice board.
Documents, indexes and archive material of all sorts, relating to the history of the town, are available to view. Someone is always on hand to help with enquiries relating to both family and local history.
Discover the Town Archive
Silsden Town Hall is the home of the Town Archive, which is curated by members of the Local History Group. This has been building up steadily since 2013 and at the start of 2019 the Archive had 117 deposits (some of which contain many items).
Artefacts deposited include old nails, the last clog iron ever made in the town, a Victorian baton, historic coat hangers from Silsden drapers, swashes of material woven in the local mills and an early, local Co-operative Society commemorative mug, as well as badges, medals and a 17thcentury pewter spoon found in the local beck. Documents in the Archive include a large, 19th century family bible, historic school and local church magazines, mid-19thcentury farm account books, hand-drawn historic maps of the town and the records of a number to historic Silsden societies including the Oddfellows Friendly Society and the earliest records of the local Cricket Club.
There is also a very extensive photograph collection of local people and places. All items deposited in the Archive are available to be viewed. If you are unable to attend a Tuesday session, then contact the History Group via its website and a personal meeting can be arranged at a time more appropriate for you.
If you have any historic artefacts or documents with a Silsden connection and wish to donate them to the Archive then they will be gratefully received. If you are clearing out, check if there is anything worth preserving. Items such as old bills, letters, plans, programmes, posters and photographs can give a fascinating insight into Silsden’s past. Historic objects are also very welcome.
